In Portland, when the clouds clear and Mt. Hood shows up on the horizon, somebody always says “the mountain’s out.” Nobody asks which mountain.
Kendra and I love horror movies, and Stanley Kubrick used Timberline Lodge, up on the mountain’s south side, as the outside of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. So we spend a lot of time up here. The mountain also sits about halfway between Portland and Bend, where my cousins live, which has made it our standing meeting spot. Everybody drives in from their side and we catch up in the shadow of the Overlook. Nobody has gotten snowed in for the winter yet. We keep checking.
The Multnomah people called the mountain Wy’east. It’s the tallest point in Oregon at over 11,000 feet, and it’s technically still an active volcano, which is a whole other kind of horror movie. This one is a panorama, printed long and narrow, because a mountain like this needs the room.
