The Goonies put Haystack Rock in the movies in 1985 (hence the title, sorry). More than 40 years later it’s still the first thing everybody points a camera at in Cannon Beach, and for good reason.
This one is about scale. Two surfers stand on the wet sand in the last of the light, boards under their arms, deciding whether it’s worth it. Behind them the rock sits 235 feet tall and completely unbothered. That’s most of what living on this coast is like. The scenery is enormous and the people are out in it anyway.
